PDP sues Amaechi, INEC, over deployment of soldiers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has taken the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court over the deployment of soldiers during the March 19, 2016 rerun elections in the state.

The case was filed on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, before a State High Court in Port Harcourt.

Also included in the suit are some officials of the Nigerian Army, according to Channels.

The disclosure was made by the PDP’s lawyer, Kingsley Chuku.

Chuku explained that the suit was filed because the parties involved had disobeyed a court order issued on March 15 which had restrained them from using soldiers for the elections.

The officials of the Nigerian Army involved include the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonishakin; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai and the Commander, 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

The Rivers rerun election has caused major controversy due to the violence which broke out during the conduct of the polls.
